If you ever need a break from your phone, work and want to do a serious digital detox weekend (or even week), or if you are looking for some of the best resorts in Oman or middle east region for a small getaway, the Alila Jabal Akhdar in Oman is your place to go!
With its peaceful environment, located 2000m above the sea level, pampering service, a spectacular view of the mountains, infinity pools and one of the best spas in Middle East, the Jabal Akhdar – “Green Mountain” in Arabic – resort offers all the heart desires.
Once arrived, we were warmly welcomed with a nice cup of traditional Omani coffee and fresh dates, which is a common way of welcoming guests in the Arabic culture. Still overwhelmed by the location, the interior and the friendly staff which already made us feel so special, And it was just the beginning.. Later, when entering the room on the first floor, we were stunned by the spacious bathroom, the sweet Omani specialties that were already waiting for us and of course the balcony! What a view! The pictures speak for themselves..
How to reach Alila Jabal Akhdar
Some of you might have done research on how to go to Alila Jabal Akhdar from Dubai (or else where you are coming from) we can tell you that there are a few ways.
Going to Alila Jabal Akhdar by air
Personally, we went from Dubai to Alila by air (Flight duration: 50 minutes) and got a pickup from Muscat Airport, as it was the shortest option for us. From Muscut airport to the resort it takes approximately 2.5 hours but don’t let this discourage you! It is in fact a really nice drive through the beautiful mountains where you can see greenery, farmers with their sheep, goats and donkeys or even a falcon (a real eye candy if you are coming from Dubai where you barely see animals). You can call and ask the resort staff to arrange a pickup service for you or you can rent a 4×4 (recommended to rent a 4×4) either directly from the airport or nearby the airport.
Going to Alila Jabal Akhdar by road
(Dubai to Alila Jabal Akhdar)
If you would like to go by road (a 4×4 is recommended as the uphill drive can be really challenging) it is approximately a 6 hour drive from Dubai to the resort.
Another thing we got asked after our trip to Alila Jabal Akhdar was how to get a Visa if you are going to one of the resorts in Oman or traveling to Oman for hiking, sightseeing, etc.
After our 50 minutes flight from Dubai to Muscat airport, we just queued in the visa on arrival section, on our turn, we showed our passports and paid 11 Omani Rial (approximately 110 AED or 30 USD) for two persons. Actually it would have been only 10 OR (95 AED or 25 USD) but as we we paid using credit card, we were charged 1 OMR extra. If you would like to pay by cash, they accept all currencies there, so do not worry about money exchange. Oman allows visa on arrival for UAE residents and for most of the countries’ residents and citizens (Tip: here you can check if you are eligible for visa on arrival for Oman)
Oh, where should we start… 3 words: We. Are. Fascinated!
The day starts with a luxuriant breakfast with choices of hot and cold dishes such as french toast, egg benedict, porridge with fresh fruits and an authentic Bircher Muesli, just to name a few. And these were just on the menu! In the neighboring room, a variety of fresh juices (pomegranate, cantaloupe and mango), cakes, bread, cereals, nuts and fruits awaited us. For lunch time, the Jabal Akhdar resort offers a choice of Arabic meals but also a perfectly grilled steak, salads and much more.
The evenings were our favorite. There was so much choice on the menu and you were supposed to choose either one fixed Arabic/Omani menu or three courses of your choice- appetizer, main course and dessert – from the menu. Reaching from an on spot cooked duck leg with Brussels sprouts to Shawarma over Creme Brulée and date ice cream, it was not easy to chose. Luckily the waiters were quite helpful!
The best thing: Breakfast and dinner are already included in the room rate and the prices for the lunch menu are quite reasonable.
Alila Jabal Akhdar is not only one of the best resorts in oman but also one of the best honeymoon destinations in the Middle East, as one can peacefully celebrate togetherness and indulge yourself and your partner with an A to Z spa program, like a free of charge steam room, a relaxing massage, a heated indoor pool and an own freestanding tub in the room. How romantic!
If we had to rate our stay at Alila Jabal Akhdar we would give it a Triple A, 5 out of 5 plus one extra star for the amazing service and making us feel like a part of the family!
